Stoney Field Improvements for Charleston County School District
Stoney Field in Charleston, South Carolina, has hosted many games and sports events since opening in 1964. As it aged, the field began to sink and have severe ponding to the point where games had to be cancelled.
Looking for maximum use of the stadium, Charleston County School District hired Davis & Floyd to complete a feasibility study. This study recommended improvements needed to bring Burke High School’s soccer/football field up to an acceptable state of repair.
Recommended improvements provided a field that could be maintained and played on safely with new track and field facilities constructed that would be suitable for competition-level tournaments.
Our team provided three alternatives: one year, five years, and long-term that could be made to the field to bring it up to competition levels.
We designed a $2.5 million facility that included the first synthetic turf field in the City of Charleston, re-covered stadium seating, added new lights, and provided a new score board. Stoney Field now has the capacity and best conditions to host not only Burke High School football, but also the city’s recreation department’s football, soccer, and lacrosse teams for youth and adults.
