After completing routine bridge inspections on the S-31 (York Street) northbound and southbound bridges over the Norfolk Southern Railway, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) determined both bridges were structurally deficient and needed to be replaced.
SCDOT commissioned Davis & Floyd for this dual-bridge replacement project. After closing the northbound bridge, SCDOT asked our team to accelerate the design to replace both bridges.
We worked closely with residents and representatives of the City of Aiken to maintain and incorporate the unique historical infrastructure characteristics of the existing wooden bridges into the new design.
Our team modeled the S-31 (York Street) Dual Bridge Replacement project in 3D for a more accurate depiction of impacts on property owners. The rendering also helped the SCDOT and City of Aiken develop a detailed vision of the finished product. The bridges are the first wooden bridges designed for SCDOT.
This project received an American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina Engineering Excellence Award. SCDOT also won an award for Best Use of Technology & Innovation, Small Project Category at the regional America’s Transportation Awards competition.
