Originally constructed in 1938, the Rivers Education Center is a historic, two-story, and 72,000 SF school building with slate roofing and solid brick masonry exterior walls. Charleston County School District selected Davis & Floyd to provide architectural and engineering services as the program administrator for renovation of the existing building for reuse as a school for the Charter School for Math and Science and Lowcountry Tech program.
The first phase included structural/seismic retrofit of the existing structure, exterior restoration of the building’s façade, and installation of core utilities. The second phase included the tenet upfit of the interior building systems.
This project received an American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina Engineering Excellence Award.
