Located in Charleston, Port Access Road (PAR) is a complex roadway and bridge interchange project that provides direct access from I-26 to the South Carolina Ports Authority’s Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal. The project consists of the new fully directional interchanges on I-26, connector bridge from I-26 to the terminal, extension of Stromboli Avenue, and connector roads to Bainbridge Avenue and Tidewater Drive.
As a major subconsultant, Davis & Floyd provided designs for local roadways and intersections, stormwater, bridge scour, and three bridges with complex seismic design. We also conducted field surveys and led the preparation of the Environmental Compliance Manual and three-phased land disturbance permit.
As part of the design-build pre-bid process, we reconfigured a full-width bridge with a median into two separate bridges, decreasing the total deck area and weight of the new bridge. Also, we designed certain sections of the bridge to use pile and cap construction instead of drilled shafts, resulting in significant savings.
