With the overall goal of connecting US 701 to US 17 Alt with a four-lane road through Brick Chimney Road, Georgetown County contracted with Davis & Floyd to provide design and CEI services that are responsive, tailored, and cost-efficient. This project is broken up into three phases.
Phase 1
Phase 1 realigned 2.4 miles of existing Brick Chimney Road from Johnson Road to Browns Ferry Road at a 90-degree angle for improved traffic safety along with a new bridge over the canal.
The roadway involved two 12’ lanes and 10’ shoulders with a minimum of 2’ of the shoulder paved. On Browns Ferry Road (SC 51), existing underground utilities were relocated to accommodate roadway widening and the addition of turn lanes. Intersection improvements included adding turn lanes at Johnson Road, Browns Ferry Road, and US 701. Construction permits acquired included SCDOT Encroachment, Georgetown County Stormwater, SCDHEC OCRM, and USACE.
During construction of the International Paper’s Canal bridge, it was imperative the canal’s flow was not disrupted as it supplies both Georgetown County and the International Paper Plant. Our team continually monitored construction to ensure there were no disruptions to the local water supply.
Recognized for its importance, this phase received an ACEC-SC Engineering Excellence Award.
Phase 2
Phase 2 involved our stormwater engineers’ designing drainage alternatives to replace minimally defined drainage outfalls and channels along a flat wooded area. The county and its agencies selected the best-suited alternative that addresses their goals, budget, and needs.
We designed four alternatives: separate outfalls with easements, smaller new outfalls with special ditches, wide “pond” ditches, and equalizer pipes. After conducting meetings with the county and its agencies to select the best solution, we finalized our designs and began construction.
Phase 3
Phase 3 will soon begin.
