Cypress Gardens is a 170-acre nature preserve and botanical gardens located in Berkeley County near Moncks Corner, SC. The centerpiece of the gardens is the 80-acre blackwater cypress swamp surrounded by boat and pedestrian trails, which includes 10 timber pedestrian bridges used to access the different areas of the trails.

Pedestrian Bridge Replacement

In October 2015, the historic flooding that affected many areas of South Carolina greatly impacted Cypress Gardens. It was closed while repairs were designed and necessary funds were acquired. Berkeley County retained us to evaluate the damage that occurred to the pedestrian bridges, make recommendations for any needed repairs, and design the repairs.

Our team designed replacements for three of the existing timber pedestrian bridges and structural repairs for two of existing timber pedestrian bridges. Pedestrian railings were replaced on six of the existing timber bridges with new code-compliant railings. We also designed asphalt paving improvements to approximately 1,660’ of trails.
