Perpendicular to the Ashley River lies the West Ashley Bikeway. The popular 2.5-mile cycling and walking path suffered significant damage from overgrown trees, broken pavement, and heavy community use. The City of Charleston Parks Department saw a need to revitalize the 40-year-old trail. Davis & Floyd was selected to design and permit a full replacement of the existing bikeway from Playground Road to Wantoot Boulevard.

Davis & Floyd revitalized the West Ashley Bikeway to better accommodate the community and to allow for alternate transportation in the West Ashley district. Our team worked to widen the existing path to a 10’-wide crowned and paved bike path, add detectable warning surfaces at all locations where the bike path crossed a road, and design landscaping consisting of more than 100 assorted shrubs and 60 trees throughout the length of the project. Wherever practical, the existing mature trees remained in place.

The once dilapidated railway is now a newly paved path that allows visitors from all around to enjoy the pathway by either foot or bike. The smoother, widened path of the trail highlight the marshland and waterfront views that are enjoyable for locals and tourists alike.
