This popular 2.5-mile cycling and walking path suffered significant damage from overgrown trees, broken pavement, and heavy community use.

The City of Charleston Parks Department wanted to revitalize the 40-year-old trail and selected Davis & Floyd to design and permit a full replacement of the existing bikeway.

We revitalized West Ashley Bikeway to better accommodate the community and allow for alternative transportation in the West Ashley district. Our team widened the existing path to a 10’-wide crowned and paved bike path, added detectable warning surfaces at all locations where the bike path crossed a road, and designed landscaping consisting of more than 100 assorted shrubs and 60 trees throughout the length of the project. Wherever practical, existing mature trees remained in place.

Visitors enjoy a smoother, widened trail that highlights the marsh and waterfront views.
