The Calhoun West project area includes the Medical University of South Carolina, Roper Hospital, US Coast Guard, College of Charleston, and other historically, culturally, and economically significant facilities. Many locations within the study area experience frequent flooding conditions during and immediately after rainfall events, particularly when storms occur during higher tide elevations.
The City of Charleston engaged Davis & Floyd to study the area and recommend infrastructure improvements to address stormwater drainage and vulnerability to sea level rise.
We created 1D, 2D, and combined 1D/2D hydrologic and hydraulic watershed models in order to identify the nature of flooding conditions and establish baseline parameters to evaluate potential short-range and long-range improvements. Our team developed and simulated conceptual improvements, including surface collection systems, tunnels, and pumping stations, in the model to assess the impacts and determine optimal levels of services.
We will develop a project deliverable including a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) outlining potential improvements, funding opportunities, and permitting requirements needed to alleviate frequent and damaging flooding within the study area.
